Abstract

A well-known Japanese historian and political scientist is considering the intricate historical, legal and political turnings of the half-a-century negotiations between Japan and USSR/Russia about four Southern islands of the Kuril range. The author’s estimations are characteristic for the stressed neutrality of an unbiased historian. The analysis is based mainly on archival documents, some of which have thus for the first time been introduced into scientific circulation.
