Abstract

Civilization, while being the exponent of universal propensity of people for arranging and tilling the world / for global expansion, is at the sane time the community of cultural-historical types that have differing world-arranging programs entering into complicated dialogue fraught with conflicts. The image of civilization-oecumene is imprinted in the archetype of eternal Rome – errant empire overpassing confessional, ethnic and geographical bounds. It is amidst ascendant influence of cultural and historical heritage of Second Rome – Byzantium – that identity of Russia was forming, and the said identity absorbed, in addition to the rest, the spirit of extremity so characteristic of permanently border-land territories, as well as the psychological dominant of “people en route” – their disposition to non-formal character of relations.

Keywords
dialogue among civilizations; Empire; Orthodoxy; Eastern Christian civilization; Eternal town; globalization; Russia.
