The article examines a series of issues related to the current Afghan crisis, such as various states’ approaches to the conflict (contradictions and disagreements between them) at the global and regional level, the economic and domestic political situation in Afghanistan and the problems of preventing a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe; issues of legitimacy of the interim Taliban government in the eyes of the international community and the problem of its recognition; the terrorist threat from Afghanistan after the seizure of power by the Taliban; the problem of the production and traffic of drugs. The authors briefly analyze the background of the crisis, including a number of features of the previous Taliban regime that governed the country from 1996 to 2001. The authors emphasize the fact that the Afghan crisis is deep, large-scale and protracted, that it is fraught with all sorts of exacerbations, including those with the most negative consequences for the countries of Central Asia, in whose security and stability the Russian Federation is vitally interested.
